Background and Purpose

Two nurses were called and commissioned to become the church's Parish Nurses in 1998, inaugurating a new dimension of the church's health ministries. Our Parish Nurses actively promote the mission of Evangelical Reformed Church to care for one another as God cares for us by providing services of holistic nursing and healing practices.

Description

Our Parish Nurses are licensed Registered Nurses who report to the Health and Wholeness Committee and serve in cooperation with the church staff.

Roles

Our Parish Nurses seek to integrate physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual wholeness in our church community and those in its ministry in the following roles:

Personal Health Counselors:  Our Parish Nurses are available to discuss our health concerns, to recommend medical intervention when necessary, and to make hospital, nursing home,  and home visits.

Health Educators: Our Parish Nurses seek to raise our health awareness and to foster an understanding of the relationship of lifestyles, personal habits, attitudes and faith to total well-being.

Referral Sources:  Our Parish Nurses draw on health related resources from families, the congregation, and the community and assist persons in accessing appropriate resources.

Facilitators: Our Parish Nurses train and coordinate volunteers for service, and work with the Church Staff to link volunteers and needs appropriately.

Our Parish Nurses are trained in Healing Touch Spiritual Ministry which includes the laying on of hands and other energy based healing therapies from a Judeo-Christian perspective.
